This is but a repetition and confirmation of what is before expressed in different words; and may be applied, as to a praying saint, so to a faithful preacher of the word. It is an essential quality of prayer throughout the Scripture. Though the Israelites have returned to their homeland, they fear for their harvest. The psalmist begins by remembering the past, “When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion.”  And right there, immediately we should say to ourselves, “Oh, these are people who know desperation.”  Their fortune has been restored, because it once was missing. Sarah knew the bitterness of being barren. Verse 1:-. Do your friends and neighbors know what God has done for you? Their vineyards and farmlands had been left largely untended for fifty years, so it took massive effort and a long time to restore them. The pilgrims making their way to Jerusalem each year for the feasts would have been acutely aware that this was the same route the captives had taken when they returned. Tuck Polybius, in describing the joy of the Greeks when unexpectedly rescued from the Macedonians, says, "Most of the men could scarcely believe the news, but imagined themselves in a dream as they listened to what was said, so extraordinary and miraculous it seemed to them." Psalm 129 is all about persevering through pain, and it is one of the more striking of the psalms of trouble.
